SABM PBM Standards

Identifying an unmet medical need, SABM has developed the Administrative and Clinical Standards for Patient Blood Management Programs, 2nd Edition®2013. These standards span all activities related to Patient Blood Management (PBM) and are intended to optimize clinical outcomes and improve patient safety.

The PBM Standards are not intended to provide strict indications, contraindications or other criteria for the practice of clinical medicine and surgery. Clinical decisions—the sole responsibility of the health care provider—may vary from patient to patient and are subject to good clinical judgment. As such, the PBM Standards should not be used as the only basis for making case-specific decisions regarding patient recommendations or diagnostic testing.

This document is a dynamic one since new information is rapidly emerging. Those practitioners and institutions that seek to establish a formal organization-wide PBM program should follow these Standards.
