SABM Statement - Jehovah's Witnesses Announcement

Following the recent announcement from Jehovah’s Witnesses regarding blood transfusion, Dr Matthew Warner, President of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management, and Becky Rock, RN, President-Elect, shared a statement on behalf of SABM, live from our 25th Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

For 25 years, our work has been guided by a single purpose: better healthcare for all. Patient blood management grew, in no small part, from the care of patients who decline blood transfusion, including Jehovah’s Witnesses. The methods developed to treat them safely became better medicine for every patient.

Just days ago in Atlanta, we marked that quarter century together. We traced the history of patient blood management with some of the legendary voices who built it, revisited the milestones and advances that shaped the field, and examined the latest evidence guiding practice today. A livestream has carried the meeting to more than 10 million people so far around the world.

To everyone who has practiced, taught, learned and advocated for patient blood management across these 25 years, thank you. The purpose that started us is the one that carries us forward: better healthcare for all.
