Each year the SABM President’s Award and the Kathleen J. Sazama Award is presented to esteemed members of the Patient Blood Management community.
SABM President’s Award
The SABM President’s Award is presented annually at the Society’s Annual Meeting in recognition of those who have made outstanding medical, scientific and/or educational contributions to patient blood management and that have contributed to the public good in the area of blood safety and the reduction of unnecessary transfusions.
2024 President’s Award Winner:
Pierre Tibi, MD
This year’s recipient of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management’s (SABM) 23rd President’s Award is Pierre Tibi, MD who is currently serving on the board as at Large Director, Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management.
Dr. Tibi served as President of SABM from 2017-2019 and Past President from 2020-2021.
Dr. Tibi has had a long interest in Patient Blood Management (PBM – performing open heart surgery without the need for transfusions) and has developed PBM programs throughout hospitals in AZ. He lectures both nationally and internationally on PBM and is a Past President of The Society for the Advancement of Blood Management and lead author of the 2021 STS/SCA/AmSECT/SABM Update to the Clinical Practice Guidelines on Patient Blood Management.
Kathleen J. Sazama Award
This award is created In recognition of Dr. Sazama’s bold insights in the field of medical ethics, her selfless dedication to the fostering of individual growth, her steadfast and responsible stewardship through change, and her tireless leadership in the field of patient blood management.
The recipient will have:
- Exemplified the high standards and qualities set by its namesake
- Demonstrated commitment to patient rights, autonomy, and informed choice
- Shown strength of character to lead with progressive evidence based thinking, even if contrary to popular belief
- Selflessly served with the well-being of the patient as the ultimate goal
- Demonstrated consistent dedication to progress in the field of patient blood management
2024 Kathleen J. Sazama Award Winner:
Arthur Bracey, MD
This year’s winner, Dr. Arthur Bracey, serves as the chief of clinical pathology at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and is a professor of pathology and immunology at Baylor College of Medicine. He has written or contributed to 66 peer-reviewed journals and numerous abstract articles at national and international conferences and meetings. His professional interests are transfusion medicine practice and peri-operative coagulation disorders.
SABM Volunteer Leadership Award
The SABM Volunteer Leadership Award is bestowed upon a non-Board member who has consistently shown active participation and superior engagement within the Society reflecting the mission and vision of PBM as the global standard of care.
