Membership Update

At the 2017 SABM Annual Meeting, another Mentorship "season" will draw to a close; for many, however, the experience will have opened up many new opportunities and relationships which are sure to live on!

Each Mentoring "partnership" is unique with the individuals involved connecting in ways (such as by phone, Skype®, or by email) and in frequencies (weekly, monthly or other) which suited their needs, styles and time constraints. It goes without saying that those working in the field of PBM/BMS are driving major change in healthcare, so SABM members are a busy group with little time to spare.  However, the support of a Mentoring relationship, whether as a Mentee or a Mentor, can be mutually beneficial and an instrument to success.

If you were part of the Mentorship Program over the past year, we want to thank you for your time and effort--bravo! Whether or not you took part over the past year, please join us at the Annual Meeting for a “Mentorship Meet-Up” during the River Cruise social event. We look forward to learning about your experiences over the past year or how we might be able to help you over the next.

Chair, Mentorship Program

A Mentee’s experience:
“Around a year ago, as I progressed in my career in Patient Blood Management, I was seeking to connect with other professionals in the field.  I stumbled across the Society of Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) Mentorship Program and applied to become a mentee.

Through the program, I was matched with a mentor with several years of experience in Patient Blood Management. We arranged for monthly, goal-directed discussions, which have helped me gain new perspective and have challenged me to stretch my thinking with the guidance of my mentor’s expertise.

Since those working in Patient Blood Management often work alone, I am grateful to have found this newly attained sense of peer partnership.  I have gained so much insight through this partnership, and it has provided reassurance that there are others out there with similar interests and visions.

As a mentee, I have benefitted greatly from hearing the lessons that my mentor has learned along the way through her past experiences - both successes and failures. She has provided me with valuable feedback and suggestions that have enabled me to improve my skills and experience both personal and professional growth.

As an expert in the field, she easily recognized my unique talents and made suggestions about how I could further develop to make the most of my talents, gifts and professional experience.

Having an SABM mentor, who is an interested listener, has enabled me to have a sounding board to discuss and test ideas in a safe, confidential environment. The benefits of having someone who will cheer for my wins and work with me if I am struggling has proven immeasurable.

Looking back, I am so thankful that I made the decision to apply to the SABM mentorship program. I would encourage anyone wondering whether they should pursue becoming a mentee in this amazing program to jump in - I am so glad that I did!”
